  1. The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe
A Review by Michaela Giuliana Arriola

Nemo me impune lacessit. No one strikes me with impunity. The over all theme of the piece from Edgar Poe and was presented as the motto of the Montresor family. Being a genius of romantic dark prose, he was not easily understood and even was disrespected by several of his editors. This piece was a kind of vent to punish his editors and mock their intelligence without anyone finding out. Montresor was insulted in some way by the nobleman Fortunato. He devised a plan to have all the servants on vacation and leave him be with Fortunato in the catacombs. He had his chance in the even and highest madness of a festival with Fortunato emanating warmth from all the liquor he had downed. He lured the connoisseur with a cask of Amontillado, which is a very rare treat in their time and 'till now. Montresor succeeded in punishing Fortunato, chained and encased in a niche somewhere in the catacombs, in the chambers where all Montresors carry out their motto. The crime was ingenious but there were flaws as this was not thoroughly done. Poe wrote this in just a matter of getting his chest out. Unlike the Tell-Tale Heart, there was no investigation. Surely a noble and a connoisseur of Fortunato's standard would be missed by the Lady Fortunato and others? And, how the noble Fortunato managed to get so drunk when he was suppose to be a connoisseur—wine is a delicacy and supposed to be savoured not gulp in one go just like one of the scenes down in the catacombs.

I highly favour The Murders of the Rue Morgue but The Cask of Amontillado is still a good read. With an interesting plot and reeling prose and a short storyline, anyone should be able to read it with a concious heart.
